Where to Stay in Paris: A Neighborhood Guide

Paris is divided into 20 districts, known as arrondissements. They spiral out from the center (Point Zero at Notre Dame) in a clockwise direction like a snail shell (l'escargot).

Generally, the lower the number (1-8), the more central, historic, and expensive. The higher numbers (9-20) are more residential and diverse.

Choosing the right arrondissement is critical. Do you want to step out of your door and see the Eiffel Tower (7th)? Or do you want to drink natural wine with cool locals in a grit-chic alleyway (11th)?

Here is our definitive guide to the best neighborhoods in Paris.

First Timers
1st (Louvre) or 4th (Marais)
Romance & History
6th (Saint-Germain)
Village Vibe
18th (Montmartre)
Food & Nightlife
11th (Oberkampf)
Families
5th (Latin Quarter) or 7th

1. Le Marais (3rd & 4th Arrondissements)

Best for: History, trendy shopping, and LGBTQ+ nightlife.

One of the few areas of Paris that wasn't bulldozed by Baron Haussmann in the 19th century. As a result, it retains its pre-revolutionary medieval layout: narrow, winding cobblestone streets and hidden courtyards.

The Vibe: It feels intimate and incredibly cool. By day, it’s a shopping destination for fashion-forward boutiques. By night, it’s vibrant with bars and restaurants. It is also the center of Jewish life in Paris (the falafel on Rue des Rosiers is world-famous).

💡

Sunday Opening: Le Marais is one of the few areas where shops remain open on Sundays in France.

Where to Stay

  • Luxury: Le Pavillon de la Reine. A secret hotel on the Place des Vosges covered in ivy.
  • Mid-Range: Hotel Caron de Beaumarchais. Quirky, 18th-century theatrical decor.
  • Budget: MIJE Marais. A youth hostel set in three 17th-century mansions. Simple but stunning location.

2. Saint-Germain-des-Prés (6th Arrondissement)

Best for: Classic Parisian elegance, literary history, and romance.

Located on the Left Bank (Rive Gauche), this was the stomping ground of Hemingway, Sartre, and Picasso. It is polished, expensive, and beautiful.

The Vibe: Sophisticated. Think art galleries, antique shops, and waiters in black waistcoats serving €8 coffees at Les Deux Magots. It feels safe, clean, and very "cinema" Paris.

Pros

  • Ideally centrally located
  • Safe and beautiful streets
  • Excellent transport links (Odeon/Saint-Germain)

Cons

  • Very expensive hotels and dining
  • Can feel a bit snobbish/stiff
  • Not much gritty/cool nightlife

Where to Stay

  • Luxury: Hotel Lutetia. The only "Palace" hotel on the Left Bank. Recently renovated and stunning.
  • Mid-Range: Hotel des Marronniers. Hidden down a courtyard with a private garden (rare in Paris!).

3. The Latin Quarter (5th Arrondissement)

Best for: Students, deep history, and budget travelers.

Neighboring Saint-Germain, the Latin Quarter is the home of the Sorbonne University. It got its name because Latin was spoken in the streets here by scholars in the Middle Ages.

The Vibe: Lively and chaotic. It’s a mix of tourists seeing the Pantheon and students eating cheap financing crepes. The narrow streets near the Seine (like Rue de la Huchette) are tourist traps, but move deeper in towards the Pantheon for authentic charm.

Where to Stay

  • Luxury: Hotel Monge. A wellness-focused boutique hotel.
  • Mid-Range: Hotel des Grandes Ecoles. It feels like a country house in the middle of the city.
  • Budget: Young and Happy Hostel. One of the oldest hostels in Paris, right on Rue Mouffetard.

4. Montmartre (18th Arrondissement)

Best for: Artists, dreamers, and village lovers.

Perched on a high hill in the north, Montmartre was a separate village until 1860. It still feels like one.

The Vibe: It’s a tale of two cities. The area around Sacré-Cœur and Place du Tertre is swamped with tourists. But the "back side" of the hill (Lamarck-Caulaincourt) is quiet, leafy, and incredibly romantic with its windmills and vineyards.

⚠️

The Hill: You will walk uphill constantly. If you have mobility issues, this is a challenging area to base yourself in.

Where to Stay

  • Luxury: Hôtel Particulier Montmartre. Hidden in a private alleyway. Very exclusive.
  • Mid-Range: Terrass" Hotel. The rooftop bar has one of the best views of the Eiffel Tower in the city.

5. The Louvre & Tuileries (1st Arrondissement)

Best for: Convenience and luxury.

The geographic center. If you want to wake up and be 5 minutes from the Mona Lisa, stay here.

The Vibe: Regal. It is dominated by the Palace of the Louvre, the Tuileries Gardens, and the Place Vendôme (home of the Ritz). It is quiet at night because few people actually live here; it’s mostly offices, luxury hotels, and monuments.

Where to Stay

  • Luxury: The Ritz Paris. Enough said.
  • Mid-Range: Hotel Le Pradey. Great location near the Tuileries.

6. The 11th (Bastille / Oberkampf)

Best for: Foodies and locals.

This is where the cool kids live. It lacks major "sights" (no Eiffel Tower here), which keeps the tour buses away.

The Vibe: Energetic and authentic. This arrondissement has the highest density of restaurants and bars in the city. It is the heart of the "Bistronomy" and Natural Wine movement.

Where to Stay

  • Mid-Range: Hotel Fabric. A converted textile factory with industrial-chic design.
  • Budget: Les Piaules. A modern, custom-built hostel with a rooftop bar.

Verdict: How to Choose?

  1. For pure romance: 6th (Saint-Germain).
  2. To feel like a cool local: 11th or 10th (Canal Saint-Martin).
  3. For shopping: 3rd/4th (Marais).
  4. For views: 18th (Montmartre).
  5. For families: 5th (near Luxembourg Gardens) or 7th (near Eiffel Tower).

Paris is a small city with a great metro system. Wherever you stay, the rest of the city is only 20 minutes away.
