Things to Do in Lisbon

Pastries, palaces, and tiles. The essential Lisbon bucket list.

Things to Do in Lisbon

Lisbon is best explored by following your nose (to the nearest bakery) or your legs (up the nearest hill).

Food & Drink

Pasteis de Belém

The original custard tart factory. They sell 20,000 a day.

  • Tip: The line for takeaway is long. The line for a table inside is often shorter and moves faster.

Time Out Market

A giant food hall in Cais do Sodré curating the best chefs in the city. Great for trying everything at once.

Ginjinha

A sweet cherry liqueur sold in tiny hole-in-the-wall bars. Try A Ginjinha near Rossio Square. Eat the cherry at the bottom!

History & Sights

Castelo de São Jorge

The castle overlooking the city. Great walls to walk along and peacocks roaming the gardens. Best sunset view.

Tram 28

The famous yellow vintage tram that rattles through the narrow streets of Alfama.

  • Tip: Board at Martim Moniz (the start) early in the morning to get a seat. Watch for pickpockets.

Jerónimos Monastery

A masterpiece of Manueline architecture in Belém. The cloisters are breathtaking.

Culture

Fado Music

Haunting, soulful Portuguese folk music.

  • Where: Clube de Fado in Alfama for a show, or Tasca do Chico in Bairro Alto for "Fado Vadio" (amateur/impromptu).

LX Factory

A converted industrial complex under the bridge. Full of hip shops, restaurants, and street art. Don't miss the Ler Devagar bookstore.

Day Trips

Sintra

A fairytale town of palaces 40 mins by train. Pena Palace (colorful castle) and Quinta da Regaleira (initiation well) are musts.

Cascais

A charming seaside town for a beach day. Easy train ride along the coast.
